Google Appeals Against Epic Games’ Play Store Demands

Google has appealed to a California court to reject the remedies proposed by Epic Games after the Play Store was declared an illegal monopoly. The tech giant argues that the changes demanded by Epic Games would be too expensive and could potentially compromise the security of Android users.

Epic Games’ demands include providing third-party app stores with access to Google Play’s app catalog, supporting library porting that would allow Android users to change ownership for apps installed via Google Play to the same app available from a third-party store, and requiring Google Play to distribute third-party app stores. Google estimates that implementing these changes could cost up to $137 million, not including the potential damage to the Google and Play brands or the Android ecosystem.

Google has objected to these demands, stating that they would give third-party app stores a free ride to benefit from Google’s own app catalog and could harm user security. The company also argues that Android 14 already addresses the goal of the library porting remedy, making additional measures unnecessary. Furthermore, Google believes that modifying the Play Store to distribute third-party app stores would be costly and pose a security risk to users.

The court has yet to make a decision on Google’s appeal. The dispute between Google and Epic Games continues, six months after a California jury declared Google Play an illegal monopoly.
