Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who traveled on Boeing’s Starliner, are currently stuck at the International Space Station (ISS). Their return trip, initially scheduled for June 14, has been postponed due to technical issues with the spacecraft. These problems include difficulties docking with the station and several helium leaks in the vessel.
Despite these setbacks, Boeing insists that the astronauts are not stranded. NASA and Boeing are working together to analyze the issues and decide on a departure date. However, when this might happen remains uncertain.
The Starliner was developed by Boeing with a $4.2 billion award from NASA. It is intended to complement SpaceX’s capabilities in transporting astronauts to and from the ISS. This voyage marks the Starliner’s first trip to space with a crew.
The spacecraft has faced numerous delays and technical issues leading up to its maiden voyage. Critics suggest that these problems, along with recent issues with Boeing’s airplanes, indicate a broader quality control issue within the company.
