Apple Intelligence, the company’s new AI feature, won’t be available on older iPhones or Vision Pro, despite the M2 chip being powerful enough to do so. The company has stated that the chips in older iPhones simply weren’t sufficiently powerful to provide a good experience, with responses taking too long on older chips.
Many have questioned why Apple Intelligence servers, also known as Private Cloud Compute, couldn’t be used for everything, especially since this is already the case with many Siri requests. However, Apple has clarified that the models that run on-device are entirely different from the ones that run in the cloud. One of these on-device models determines which tasks can execute with on-device processing and which require Private Cloud Compute or ChatGPT.
The reason Vision Pro won’t support Apple Intelligence is that the M2 chip is already running at close to capacity, so it doesn’t have enough spare capacity for Apple Intelligence. The Neural Engine of the M2 chip is already being used significantly for real-time processing purposes, such as occlusion and object detection.
In summary, while Apple Intelligence brings a new level of AI integration to Apple devices, its availability is limited to newer models due to hardware constraints and design choices. This has sparked discussions about device capabilities and the future direction of Apple’s AI development.
