The world’s leading record labels are taking legal action against two artificial intelligence startups, Suno AI and Uncharted Labs Inc. The companies are accused of training their AI models on copyrighted sound recordings, which the labels argue is an infringement of their intellectual property rights.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has filed lawsuits on behalf of Universal Music Group NV, Warner Music Group Corp., and Sony Music Entertainment. The RIAA is seeking damages of up to $150,000 per work infringed, which could potentially amount to billions of dollars.
Suno AI and Uncharted Labs, the developer of Udio AI, are part of a new wave of startups that use generative AI to automate the music-making process. Users can input a short written prompt, like “an electro-pop song about strawberries,” and the software will generate human-sounding music in seconds.
The companies argue that their technology is transformative and not based on memorizing existing content. However, the RIAA alleges that the music generated by these services closely resembles copyrighted songs. The legal challenge highlights the collision between technology and creative industries, as generative AI is increasingly used to create content.
