Google’s Gemini Expands to India

Google is expanding its Gemini app and Gemini Advanced features to India. The Gemini app, which was initially limited to Pixel and Samsung devices, is now available in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. It can be downloaded via the Play Store or opted-in via Google Assistant.

Gemini in Google Messages, which was previously restricted to devices like the Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, Samsung Galaxy S22, and later models, has now broadened its requirements to any Android device with 6GB of RAM or higher. This expansion is particularly exciting for India, given the country’s strong mobile-first culture. The app supports English and nine Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Gemini Advanced, powered by 1.5 Pro, is also available in these languages. It includes features like a 1-million token context window, document uploads, and data analysis. Users can start a chat with Gemini by tapping the Start chat FAB > Gemini in Google Messages.

Despite these advancements, there are still some limitations. Conversations are happening over RCS, which has to be generally enabled, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Gemini cannot be accessed using messages.google.com/web or the Wear OS app.
