Understanding iPhone’s Water Resistance Capabilities

Modern iPhones are water-resistant, but not waterproof. The strength of water resistance varies from model to model and can be impacted by repairs, especially if they involve the device’s battery or screen.

The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max have an IP68 rating, meaning they can withstand a depth of up to 4 meters for 30 minutes. The iPhone XS and XS Max also have an IP68 rating but can only withstand a depth of 2 meters for up to 30 minutes. The iPhone 7, 8, X, and their respective Plus/Max models have an IP67 rating, which allows them to withstand a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. The iPhone 6s, while lacking any official water or dust resistance rating, demonstrated a high level of water resistance in consumer tests. Both versions of the iPhone SE lack any water resistance.

It’s important to note that “water-resistant” and “waterproof” are not the same thing. Water-resistant devices can withstand water ingress for a limited amount of time and depth. However, water damage isn’t covered under the iPhone’s standard warranty. Therefore, despite the water resistance capabilities, it’s best to avoid exposing your iPhone to water whenever possible.
