Google can permanently ban your account, causing a significant disruption in your digital life. Waking up to find your Google account permanently banned is more than an inconvenience for those deeply integrated within the Google ecosystem. It could be devastating.
A banned Google account means losing access to daily essentials like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Photos, and Google Pay. Even your YouTube playlists would be gone. You would also have to repurchase all the apps, movies, and books you bought from the Google Play Store.
While most users will never experience a banned Google account, it can and does happen. Google has every right to terminate your account if you do not comply with their terms or policies or if they are investigating suspected misconduct.
The language in Google’s Terms of Service is very broad, giving Google full power to decide whether or not someone has “misused” a service. This leaves consumers with little recourse. For example, a group of YouTube users had their Google accounts banned for “spamming” a video feed with emojis, even though the video’s creator had encouraged this behavior.
However, Google does offer an appeals process to deal with account bans. If you live in the US or Canada, you can start an appeal and follow the onscreen instructions. If you live in the European Union or are an EU citizen, you have additional options.
