Apple Intelligence Is The Apple Way of AI

Apple has unveiled its new generative AI offering, Apple Intelligence, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.

Apple Intelligence is designed to understand the user and be grounded in their personal context, such as their routine, relationships, and communications. It goes beyond artificial intelligence to offer personal intelligence, marking a significant advancement for Apple. This feature is integral to all of Apple’s operating system offerings, including iOS, macOS, and the latest, visionOS.

Apple Intelligence is grounded in the user’s personal data and context. It builds upon all the personal data that users input into applications like Calendar and Maps. The system is built on large language and intelligence models. Much of the processing is done locally, utilizing the latest version of Apple silicon. However, some of the heavy lifting needs to be done off-device in the cloud. To address this, Apple is adding Private Cloud Compute to the offering.

Apple Intelligence also includes the biggest update to Siri since its announcement over a decade ago. Siri is now more deeply integrated into Apple’s operating systems. In addition to voice commands, users can now type queries directly into the system to access its generative AI-based intelligence. This acknowledges that voice is often not the best interface for these systems.
