AI Search Engine Perplexity Accused of Content Misappropriation

Perplexity has come under fire for allegedly republishing almost identical content from various news outlets, including Forbes, with minimal attribution. The issue was brought to light when a page created by Perplexity’s feature called ‘Pages’ was found to contain a summary of a paid exclusive article from Forbes. The summary was almost identical to the original article and did not properly display attribution.

‘Pages’ is a feature that generates web pages based on user prompts. Perplexity promotes this feature as a tool for educators to create comprehensive pages for students, and researchers to summarize their findings, and for individuals to share their hobbies. However, the lack of proper attribution and the close similarity of the summarized content to the original articles have raised concerns about the legitimacy of the feature.

The page that sparked the controversy detailed reports about former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s secret project, Project Eagle, which involves the development of AI-equipped combat drones. The page used the same wording as the Forbes article and displayed the word ‘Sources’ just below the introduction, with a list of sources including Forbes.
