Apple has made a formal commitment to provide five years of security updates for its iPhones. This announcement comes in response to the UK’s new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation, which mandates phone manufacturers to specify support periods for their devices.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max, for instance, will receive a minimum of five years of security updates from its first supply date of September 22, 2023. However, it’s worth noting that Apple’s competitors, Samsung and Google, offer seven years of security updates and Android OS updates for their latest flagship devices.
Despite this, Apple users need not worry about their devices becoming obsolete after five years. The company has a history of providing extended support for its devices, particularly when it comes to security updates. For example, the iPhone 6s, which was launched in September 2015, received a security update in March 2024, nearly nine years after its release.
