AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 Boosts Console Performance

AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 3 has been integrated into consoles, marking a significant step forward in console performance. Previously reserved for PCs, FSR 3 is now available on the Xbox Series S/X and PlayStation 5, enhancing frame generation and resulting in a performance uplift of up to 72% in the game Immortals of Aveum on Xbox Series X.

FSR 3 uses an improved iteration of AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) optical flow technology, along with temporal game data like motion vectors, to generate new in-game frames. This increases the frames per second (fps), enhancing the gaming experience. In Immortals of Aveum, the frame rates increased from an average of 46 fps to 80 fps, a 72% increase.

However, the technology is still in its early days on consoles and has some downsides. There were instances of visual artifacts and freezing issues, and the frame rate sometimes dropped to 0. Also, various 2D elements in the game’s HUD were not interpolated and not affected by frame generation, leading to a visibly lower frame rate in certain parts of the screen.

Despite these issues, the integration of FSR 3 into consoles is a promising development. It brings the benefits of upscaling and frame generation technologies, popular in the PC gaming world, to console gaming.
