Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 is set to arrive with a host of new AI features, transforming iPhones into everyday AI powerhouses. The new features include auto-generated emojis, reply suggestions in emails and messages, and more. Apple’s AI strategy focuses more on tools that ordinary consumers can use in their daily lives.
At the heart of these enhancements is Project Greymatter, a set of AI tools integrated into core apps like Safari, Notes, and Photos. The new features expected in iOS 18 and macOS 15 include voice memo transcription, photo retouching with AI, improved Safari web search, automatic reply suggestions to emails and text messages, and more natural-sounding interactions with Siri.
Apple Watch users can look forward to a more advanced Siri optimized for on-the-go tasks. Another exciting feature is the ability to create custom emojis using generative AI. There’s also a smart recap feature that provides summaries of missed notifications, individual messages, news articles, web pages, documents, notes, and more.
For developers, iOS 18 will offer AI-powered tools for Xcode. The less computing-intensive AI features will be processed entirely on the device, while more demanding ones will be pushed to the cloud. Despite the array of AI-powered features, iOS 18 won’t arrive with an official chatbot.
In addition to AI-inspired features, iOS 18 will offer a customizable iPhone Home Screen experience. Users will be able to change the color of app icons and arrange them wherever they want. This marks a significant departure from the standard grid that has existed since the iPhone’s inception in 2007.
The upcoming iOS 18 and macOS 15 are expected to include software to determine whether a task should be handled on the device or moved to the cloud.
