The iconic Japanese cyberpunk manga series, Ghost in the Shell, is set to return with a brand-new anime in 2026. The series, currently titled The Ghost in the Shell, is being produced by Scott Pilgrim Takes Off studio Science SARU and the franchise’s longtime studio, Production I.G (Kaiju No. 8).
The original Ghost in the Shell manga, created by Masamune Shirow, has been one of the most influential Japanese cyberpunk stories. It revolves around an anti-crime and counterterrorism group, Public Security Section 9, and its cyborg field commander, Motoko Kusanagi.
The franchise has seen numerous adaptations, including the 1995 film, which has a huge cult following and is considered one of the best sci-fi films ever. The latest anime based on the manga was Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 in 2020.
