EU Data Protection Board Finds OpenAI’s ChatGPT Lacking in Data Accuracy Standards

The European Union’s Data Protection Board (EDPB) has raised concerns over the data accuracy standards of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The EDPB, which unites Europe’s national privacy watchdogs, has stated that the measures taken by OpenAI to improve the transparency of ChatGPT’s outputs are insufficient to comply with the data accuracy principle.

The EDPB’s task force on ChatGPT was established last year after national regulators, led by Italy’s authority, expressed concerns about the widely used artificial intelligence service. The task force’s report, released recently, emphasizes that data accuracy is a guiding principle of the EU’s data protection rules.

The report points out that due to the probabilistic nature of the system, the current training approach may lead to biased or made-up outputs. It further states that the outputs provided by ChatGPT are likely to be taken as factually accurate by end users, including information relating to individuals, regardless of their actual accuracy.

The EDPB’s findings are seen as a common denominator among national authorities. Investigations launched by national privacy watchdogs in some member states are still ongoing, and it is not yet possible to provide a full description of the results.
