OpenAI and WSJ Owner News Corp Ink Content Licensing Deal

OpenAI has secured a key content licensing deal with News Corp, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal. The multiyear agreement grants OpenAI unrestricted access to current and archived articles from the Journal and other News Corp publications like The New York Post, Barron’s, and MarketWatch.

The licensing deal will allow OpenAI to display content from News Corp’s media sites within its responses when prompted by user questions. The aim is to use this content to enhance its products, which likely means it will be used to train future iterations of its large language models (LLMs).

News Corp plans to share its journalistic expertise with OpenAI to ensure the highest possible standards of journalism across its offerings. News Corp CEO Robert Thomson described the deal as a historic agreement that will set new standards for veracity, virtue, and value.

The partnership has been in the works for some time, with Thomson hinting at the deal during his company’s most recent financial earnings call. He expressed his gratification that the most enlightened leaders in the AI industry appreciate the value of News Corp’s content.

This deal follows OpenAI’s recent partnership with Reddit, where it will use the company’s content to train its AI models. OpenAI’s intention is not only to secure more relevant training data for its LLMs but also to compete better with Google Search by turning its AI into a primary gateway to the rest of the world.
