Microsoft Plans to Phase Out VBScript Starting 2024

Microsoft has announced its plan to start phasing out VBScript, a scripting language that has been a system component for 30 years. The deprecation process will be carried out in three phases. The first phase will commence in the second half of 2024, where VBScript will be enabled by default as an optional feature in Windows 11 24H2.

The second phase, expected to start around 2027, will see VBScript still available as an on-demand feature but it will no longer come pre-installed. This means all VBScript dynamic link libraries will be removed, causing projects that use VBScript to stop functioning.

Microsoft’s decision to retire VBScript aligns with their transition to the more efficient PowerShell experiences. The company had previously disabled VBScript by default in Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 with the July 2019 Patch Tuesday cumulative updates.
