Bluesky has finally introduced a direct messaging (DM) feature, providing users with a new way to communicate privately. The DM system, although currently basic, allows users to send text and emoji in one-on-one conversations. However, the platform has announced plans to expand this feature in future updates, including the ability to share images, videos, and engage in group chats.
While the addition of DMs is a significant step forward for Bluesky, it also comes with privacy considerations. The platform has stated that in rare cases, the Bluesky moderation team may need to access DMs to investigate patterns of abuse, such as spam or coordinated harassment. This access is said to be extremely limited and tracked internally.
Users have control over who can send them DMs, with the default setting allowing only people they follow to message them. This setting can be changed to allow anyone, or no one, to send DMs. Accounts that a user has blocked will not be able to send DMs, but muted accounts will still have this ability.
