Sonos has made its much-anticipated entry into the personal audio market with the launch of its first-ever wireless headphones, the Sonos Ace. Priced at $449, these headphones are set to compete with top-tier offerings from Sony, Bose, and Apple.
The Sonos Ace headphones come packed with features that are now standard in flagship wireless headphones. These include active noise cancellation, transparency mode, spatial audio with head tracking, high-resolution and lossless audio, and Bluetooth Multipoint. The headphones are available in two matte-finish colors: black and soft white, and are set to hit the market on June 5.
One unique feature of the Sonos Ace is its ability to swap TV audio with the Sonos Arc soundbar. This feature allows users to mute the Arc’s speakers and pass along stereo, 5.1, or full Dolby Atmos with 7.1.4 channels directly to the Ace via a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection. This feature is expected to be enabled on other popular Sonos soundbars in the future.
Despite the impressive feature set, some Sonos fans may be disappointed as the Ace headphones do not support whole-home streaming or seamless interaction with other Sonos speakers. However, Sonos has stated that this decision was made after careful consideration, as a persistent Wi-Fi connection would be too power-hungry and users might not react well to the shift from a Wi-Fi-based link inside the home to a Bluetooth one when on the go.
