Android Users Unaware of Seven-Year-Old Notification Channels Feature

A recent poll conducted on Android Authority revealed that a significant number of Android users are still unaware of the notification channels feature, which has been a part of the Android operating system since 2017. The poll received over 5300 votes, and a surprising 43.6% of respondents were unfamiliar with what notification channels or categories are on their Android devices.

Notification channels allow users to have more granular control over which app notifications can be intrusive or visible, thus preventing a long list of unnecessary alerts. Users can head to an app’s notification settings and select the channels they wish to disable or enable. Despite this feature’s utility, it appears that many Android users are still not making full use of it.

The poll also revealed that 40.2% of voters use notification channels and agreed that iOS could benefit from a similar system. Some voters even expressed that they missed features like notification history and notification snoozing on iOS. However, a few voters felt that iOS has a superior notification system compared to Android.

Interestingly, one voter pointed out that Android’s notification system was much better before than it is now. They expressed disappointment with the changes made to the notification system in Android 11 and later versions, stating that they could get a vastly superior notification experience by using a 6-10 year old phone.
