Google’s I/O 2024 conference unveiled a significant upgrade to the sign-in process across Android 15 and Wear OS 5. The tech giant is introducing passkeys in Gboard on Android 15, and they will also be available on Wear OS 5.
Single-Tap Sign-In Experience
Google is introducing a new single-tap sign-in experience for passkeys. Previously, users had to confirm the account and then authenticate via fingerprint, face, or PIN. The new experience combines all these steps into one, reducing the process from two taps to just one. If users have multiple accounts on a service, they can switch accounts using the “More options” feature.
Credential Manager and Autofill
The new versions of Credential Manager on Android 15 will roll out this feature. Autofill will show Credential Manager results in Gboard suggestions and when clicking on a relevant input field during sign-in. This applies to passkeys, Sign in with Google, and passwords. This feature is particularly useful when users accidentally dismiss the Credential Manager account selector.
Passkeys on Wear OS 5
Credential Manager is also coming to watches with Wear OS 5. This will allow users to log in to apps with passwords, passkeys, or Sign in with Google. The current process might involve keeping the mobile companion app open or entering a sign-in PIN. The new feature will provide a more familiar experience that matches your phone.
