Melinda French Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has announced her decision to resign from her role at the foundation. This decision comes as part of her plan to launch her own charity, for which she will receive $12.5 billion.
Despite her resignation, the work of the Gates Foundation will continue. Bill Gates has stated that he and Melinda will run the foundation “together forever”, even after their public divorce last year. The foundation has been a significant force in global philanthropy, with the couple having donated $55 billion to it, making them the biggest philanthropists of all time.
Melinda’s decision to start her own charity marks a shift in her philanthropic strategy. Previously, she had committed to giving the bulk of her personal fortune, estimated at around $11 billion, to the Gates Foundation. However, she will now spread this wealth among other philanthropic causes.
