iOS 17.5 Unveiled, Here’s What’s New For Your iPhone

Apple’s iOS 17.5 is now available for download on any iPhone newer than the iPhone XR. Here are the four major features that iOS 17.5 introduces.

1. Third-Party Web App Downloads (EU-only)

iOS 17.5 expands the sideloading permissions introduced with iOS 17.4. Now, web developers can offer apps directly on their websites, and iPhone users in the EU can download them without visiting an app store. This change, while subject to certain conditions, marks a step towards more autonomy for iPhone owners.

2. Apple News Plus Upgrades

For subscribers to Apple’s premium news service, Apple News Plus, iOS 17.5 introduces a new daily word game called Quartiles. Players combine tiles to form words and earn points. Additionally, an offline mode is now available, allowing subscribers to access articles, audio reports, and games without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. The type of content available in this offline mode can be customized in settings.

3. Third-Party Tracker Alerts

iOS 17.5 also introduces the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers specification. This feature allows iPhone users to detect and locate third-party object trackers, enhancing security and privacy.

4. Expanded Sideload Permissions

The update further expands the sideloading permissions introduced with iOS 17.4, particularly in EU countries. Specific apps and settings, including Apple News and Find My, also receive much-needed updates.
