Samsung’s Galaxy AI Promises vs Reality

Samsung’s Galaxy AI, announced alongside the Galaxy S24 series, promised a revolution in smartphone features. However, the reality has been a mixed bag, with older handsets receiving only a subset of Galaxy AI features. This has left many customers with a pared-back vision of Samsung’s AI experience.

The Galaxy S21 series, for instance, appears to only get Circle to Search, essentially a revamped and rebranded Google Lens. On the other hand, the Z Fold 3 is set to receive AI-generated wallpapers and AI image editing. This inconsistency within the same update for products in the same generation is leading to consumer confusion about why their phone can do some new things but not others.

The situation is further complicated by the hardware requirements of AI features. The quickly changing pace of AI, especially features that run on-device, is quickly pushing up these requirements. This has led to a situation where Galaxy AI features that run in the cloud, such as Note Assist, Live Translate, and Chat Assist, are not available on all devices despite requiring a web connection.
