Microsoft’s Web-Based Mobile Game Store Launching in July

Microsoft is set to launch a mobile game store in July, marking a significant shift in the mobile gaming landscape. This new platform will not be an app, but a web-based store, making it accessible across all devices and independent of the policies of closed ecosystem stores.

The store will initially launch with Microsoft’s own games, before opening up to other publishers. This move is part of Microsoft’s long-stated intention to build a mobile app store as an alternative to the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Xbox president Sarah Bond confirmed the news during the Bloomberg Technology Summit. The store will offer discounted in-game items for popular titles like Candy Crush. Minecraft could also be one of the early titles coming to the web-based store.

It’s still unclear whether Microsoft will offer these games via a download, streaming, or both. However, the company already offers its own Xbox Cloud Gaming service that lets Xbox Game Pass subscribers stream games over the internet to their PC, console, or mobile device.
