Nintendo has finally broken its silence on the successor to its smash-hit Switch. However, fans eagerly awaiting news on the console might have to hold their excitement a little longer. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has promised an announcement at some point before March 2025, but also stated that there would be no mention of the new machine at the company’s Nintendo Direct event next month.
The original Switch, announced back in March 2015, has sold more than 130 million units since its release in 2017. Despite its success, the seven-year-old console has been criticized for struggling to run some newer games. This has led to fans demanding a more powerful Switch for at least the last three years.
The company has managed to keep customers interested with upgrades such as the revised OLED screen model released in 2021. From 2021 to the end of 2023, Nintendo sold 60 million more Switch consoles to consumers globally and has generated operating profits in excess of $10bn based on today’s exchange rates.
While it reported a rise in profits, sales of software and hardware were down, but the company said the Switch had 123 million annual users despite being eight years old. Over the past year, various rumors and alleged leaks about the new machine’s capabilities have emerged, but nothing has been confirmed by Nintendo itself.
So, while the wait for the Nintendo Switch 2 continues, we can now say, with confidence, that we’ll know something by the end of this financial year.
