Apple’s iPhone Spyware Problem Escalates with 92 Countries Affected

Apple’s iPhone users across 92 countries have been targeted by a sophisticated spyware attack. In April, Apple sent out notifications to these users, warning them about the spyware. The users, many of whom were based in India and Europe, took to social media to understand the implications of this notification.

The details of the spyware attack remain largely unknown. However, research from former smartphone giant Blackberry suggests that these attacks are linked to a Chinese spyware campaign known as “LightSpy”.

Identifying whether your device has been infected can be challenging. However, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Apple’s support page provides detailed information about mercenary spyware attacks and who is often the target of such attacks.

Mercenary spyware attacks usually target a smaller group of individuals. These complex attacks have historically been associated with state actors and often target journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats. If you have been contacted by Apple, it is recommended that you seek expert help, such as the rapid-response emergency security assistance provided by the non-profit Access Now.

Apple also recommends users update their devices to the latest iOS, currently iOS 17.4, to benefit from the latest security patches and implement two-factor authentication for their Apple ID. While it is true that very few people will ever be the victim of such a targeted attack, it is important to protect your device as best you can.
