Despite Facebook’s ban on paramilitary organizing, over 100 far-right militias are reportedly using the platform for coordination. A post in a Facebook group called the Free American Army, which has more than 650 members, urged people to join their local militia or III% Patriot Group. The post, accompanied by the logo for the Three Percenters militia network and an image of a man in tactical gear holding a long rifle, remained on the platform until it was brought to Meta’s attention.
The Free American Army is one of approximately 200 similar Facebook groups and profiles that anti-government and far-right extremists are using to coordinate local militia activity across the country. Despite Facebook deeming the Three Percenters an “armed militia group” on its 2021 Dangerous Individuals and Organizations List, many of these groups and profiles remain active.
