Windows 10 Surges to 70% Market Share as Windows 11 Dips Below 26%

Windows 10 has achieved a significant milestone, crossing the 70% market share mark for the first time since September 2023. This comes as Windows 11 continues to see a decrease in its market share. According to Statcounter, Windows 11’s market share reached an all-time high of 28.16% in February 2024, but has since been on a downward trend, dropping to 26.68% in March 2024 and further to 25.65% in April 2024.

This decline in Windows 11’s market share is notable, especially considering that even Windows 8 and 8.1, which were not well-received versions of Windows, only saw a decrease after the release of their successors. Some argue that Windows 11 offers little to no benefits for upgrading, particularly with Microsoft discontinuing some of the system’s unique features, such as the Windows Subsystem for Android. The increasing number of ads, some of which are quite intrusive, has also contributed to Windows 11’s difficulty in retaining its users.

Despite the decline, Microsoft is planning to showcase new AI features for Windows 11 later this month, which could become the first solid reason to leave Windows 10 behind. However, rumors indicate some of the most exciting parts will not be available on existing hardware. Therefore, customers who do not plan to upgrade their PCs simply have no reason to stay with Windows 11. As for Windows 7, despite the no-support state and the continuous developer support exodus, it is still alive and kicking. Statcounter says about 3% of all Windows PCs are still powered by Windows 7, which was fully discontinued in January 2023.
