Microsoft has taken a significant step towards a password-free future by introducing passkey support for all consumer accounts. This new feature allows users to access their Microsoft accounts using biometric methods such as face recognition, fingerprint, or a device PIN, thereby eliminating the need for remembering and entering passwords.
The company had previously enabled password-free sign-ins for Windows 11 users and had also introduced the option for users to delete their passwords altogether. With the introduction of passkeys, Microsoft has extended this feature across Windows, Android, and iOS platforms.
Passkeys offer a more secure and convenient way of accessing digital accounts. Instead of having to remember and manage multiple passwords, users can now access their accounts in the same way they unlock their devices. This feature is expected to significantly reduce the risk of password attacks, which have surged by 3378% over the past decade, from 115 attacks per second to more than 4000.
The company has also announced that passkey support for mobile apps will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
