The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is now set to impact Apple’s iPad, forcing the tech giant to make significant changes to iPadOS. Previously, Apple rolled out support for alternative app stores and non-WebKit browser engines in iOS 17.4 to comply with the DMA. However, these features were not included in iPadOS 17.4 as the DMA did not cover iPads at that time.
This situation has now changed. The EU has expanded the DMA’s scope to include iPads, giving Apple six months to comply. This means that EU-based iPad users could soon have the ability to use third-party app stores and uninstall more of Apple’s built-in apps.
While it’s unclear whether these changes will be included in an iPadOS 17.x update or pushed until iPadOS 18, it’s safe to assume that Apple will implement similar features on the iPad as it did on the iPhone to comply with the EU’s DMA. However, these changes are still under review and may not necessarily comply with the DMA, as several companies and developers have expressed concerns over Apple’s updated EU terms.
