Apple’s regular Mac base RAM boosts ended with Tim Cook’s leadership

Apple used to increase the base memory of its Macs every two years until 2011, the year Tim Cook became CEO. The trend of increasing base memory ended under Cook’s leadership. Despite technological advancements and market trends, the base memory of iMac and MacBook Pro models has remained at 8GB since 2012, and the MacBook Air since 2017. Apple argues that its 8GB of RAM is comparable to 16GB on rival systems due to its high-performance system-on-a-chip (SOC) architecture. However, users often pay an additional $200 or more to future-proof their machines with higher memory configurations.
