TikTok has pledged to fight a legal battle after President Biden signed a bipartisan bill into law that mandates its Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, to sell the popular video-sharing app or face a US ban. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew reassured users that the platform isn’t going anywhere and expects to prevail as the facts and the Constitution are on their side. The new law gives ByteDance 270 days to divest TikTok’s US assets. Despite the impending ban, TikTok plans to continue operations while challenging the restrictions in court. The company argues that the ban would devastate 7 million businesses and silence 170 million Americans. The American Civil Liberties Union echoed TikTok’s concerns, stating that the ban or required divestiture would set a worrying global precedent for excessive government control over social media platforms.
