IBM has acquired HashiCorp, a startup specializing in managing and optimizing AI hardware infrastructure, for $6.4 billion. This acquisition is part of IBM’s strategy to help IT departments manage complex hybrid environments. HashiCorp offers a set of cloud lifecycle management and security tools, and its business is growing faster than any of IBM’s other businesses. Despite its revenue being small by IBM standards, it still makes HashiCorp a healthy and growing business for IBM to add to its hybrid cloud tools portfolio. HashiCorp made headlines last year when it changed the license on its open-source Terraform tool to be more company-friendly, causing backlash from the community that helped build Terraform. The community responded by launching a new tool called OpenTofu. HashiCorp recently accused the new community of misusing Terraform’s trademark when it created the OpenTofu fork. Now that HashiCorp is part of IBM, it will be interesting to see if they continue to pursue this line of thinking.
