SK Hynix Announces $14.6 Billion Expansion to Meet Rising AI Demand

SK Hynix, the South Korean semiconductor giant, is planning a massive expansion to meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI). The company is investing approximately 20 trillion won (about $14.6 billion) to build a new semiconductor memory manufacturing base in South Korea. The move is aimed at significantly expanding production capacity to meet the surging demand for AI development. The company will initially invest 5.3 trillion won and aims to start construction of the new factory or manufacturing facility by the end of April, with completion targeted by November next year. The facility is expected to expand over the long term, with total investment exceeding 20 trillion won. SK Hynix leads the market in supplying high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI, outpacing rival Samsung Electronics. HBMs are well-suited for Nvidia’s AI accelerators. The company will announce its first-quarter earnings on April 25.
