Senate Passes Bill Forcing TikTok Sale or US Ban, Legal Battles Loom

The US Senate has passed a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban on TikTok. The bill requires ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell the app within a year or face being blocked in the US. The bill was part of a larger foreign aid package and received overwhelming bipartisan support. President Joe Biden has announced he will sign the bill into law. TikTok plans to challenge the move in court. The bill gives ByteDance nine months to force a sale with a 90-day extension. TikTok has continually tried to assure the government that it doesn’t give out US user data to China. The company released an economic impact report stating that TikTok generated $14.7 billion for small to mid-sized companies in the US. Civil rights groups have opposed the app’s ban.
