Microsoft Rolls Out Ads in Windows 11 Start Menu, Users Can Disable

Microsoft has started rolling out ads in the Windows 11 Start menu. These ads, showing app “recommendations” from a small set of curated developers, have begun appearing for all users this week. However, users can easily disable these new ads. The update, KB5036980, includes the feature of adding Microsoft Store app recommendations to the Start menu. Despite a brief testing period and the promise of user feedback, Microsoft decided to deploy the feature widely. After installing the update, users can disable the “Show suggestions for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more” setting under Settings > Personalization > Start.
