Meta has announced that its Virtual Reality Operating System (VR OS), now known as Horizon OS, will be available on devices beyond its own Quest headsets. This move is seen as a strategic step in the escalating VR/AR wars between Meta, Apple, Sony, and potentially Google and Samsung.
Partners such as Asus, Lenovo, and Microsoft are already on board with this initiative. Asus plans to create a performance-based VR gaming headset under its Republic of Gamers brand. Lenovo, which has previously collaborated with Meta on the Oculus Rift S PC-connected headset, plans to focus on productivity, learning, and entertainment with its VR devices compatible with Meta Horizon OS.
Interestingly, there will also be an Xbox-branded Meta Quest coming as a limited-edition product, although the details are still vague. All future headsets will connect via the same Meta Quest app on iOS and Android, which will be renamed to Meta Horizon.
