China Lags Behind US in Advanced Chip Technology, Says Secretary Raimondo

Despite a chip breakthrough by China’s Huawei, the country remains years behind the US in advanced technology, according to US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. In an interview on CBS News’ “60 Minutes”, Raimondo stated that the US has the most sophisticated semiconductors in the world, and China does not. She emphasized that the US has out-innovated China.

Raimondo’s comments come in response to Huawei’s release of the Mate 60 Pro smartphone in August, which featured a 5G-capable chip. This was seen as a significant achievement, given the US export controls imposed in late 2022 that were expected to hinder such advancements. However, Raimondo downplayed the breakthrough, stating that it’s years behind what the US has.

The US Commerce Secretary also highlighted that the Biden administration’s restrictions on chip sales to China are working. She added that the US would continue to pursue actions to protect US national security and businesses. Despite the advanced made-in-China chip surfacing in a Huawei phone last year, Raimondo believes that the US still holds the upper hand in the global chip race.
