OpenAI Makes First India Hire in Bid to Shape Regulation Early

OpenAI has made its first hire in India, recruiting Pragya Misra to lead public policy affairs and partnerships. Misra, who previously worked at Truecaller AB and Meta Platforms Inc., is set to join OpenAI by the end of the month.

This hiring move highlights OpenAI’s efforts to advocate for favorable regulations as governments worldwide consider how to regulate rapidly developing technology. With its 1.4 billion population and fast-growing economy, India presents a massive growth opportunity for global tech companies.

In India, OpenAI faces competition from the likes of Alphabet Inc.’s Google, which is developing an AI model specifically for the country. This model will be able to handle more than 100 local languages across speech and text, potentially widening internet access beyond the country’s urban English-speaking minority.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously called for more regulations and expressed his “greatest fear” that the technology could cause significant harm. He has also said that big regulatory changes weren’t needed for current versions of the technology but would be soon.
