Huawei Unveils Pura 70 Smartphone Series to Challenge Apple in China

Huawei Technologies Co. has released its latest series of smartphones, the Pura 70, aiming to continue its resurgence in China and increase its competition with Apple. The Pura 70 series starts at 5,499 yuan and goes up to 9,999 yuan for an Ultra edition, matching the price tag on some iPhone 15 models.

The Pura 70 series includes four devices: the Pura 70, 70 Pro, 70 Pro Plus, and the Pura 70 Ultra. All of the new phone offerings are equipped with cameras that are a triple-lens setup, with features including long-range zoom and the ability to capture images of objects moving at speed. The Ultra model sports a retractable camera with an adjustable aperture, a rarity in consumer phones.

The Pura 70 series also runs HarmonyOS 4.2, Huawei’s proprietary operating system which it first released in 2019 after U.S. sanctions cut it off from Google’s Android. Huawei has not revealed the central processing chip inside the device, but several online reviewers posted videos that showed higher-tier models featured a Kirin 9010 chip.

Since its introduction in August, the Mate 60 has contributed to a major decline in iPhone sales in China and helped Huawei outpace its domestic rivals. Giving domestic users a fresh option could apply further pressure on the iPhone, which isn’t due for an upgrade until September.
