Amazon Marketplace Plagued by Proliferation of Low-Quality AI-Generated and Ghostwritten eBooks

Amazon’s marketplace is reportedly filled with low-quality ebooks, many of which are created using a combination of artificial intelligence and cheap ghostwriting services. This issue has been highlighted in a recent article on Vox.

The article discusses how keyword scrapers identify trending search terms and deliver them to so-called biographers, who then use AI and low-cost ghostwriters to generate a series of books that can be titled and sold using those keywords. This process has resulted in a vast ecosystem centered on the production and distribution of very cheap, low-quality ebooks about increasingly esoteric subjects.

One example given in the article is the release of tech journalist Kara Swisher’s book, “Burn Book”. Alongside its release, a host of other books with bizarre, SEO-streamlined titles hit the Kindle store, all seemingly attempting to capitalize on the search term “Kara Swisher book”.

The article also mentions the Mikkelsen Twins, who run a program called AI Publishing Academy. This program, previously known as Audiobook Impact Academy and Publishing Life, teaches a method for producing these low-quality ebooks. The method involves using AI and cheap ghostwriting services to quickly generate content that can be sold on Amazon’s Kindle store.

However, the article points out that this practice is not only misleading for consumers but also potentially harmful to the broader publishing industry. As these low-quality ebooks become more prevalent, they could saturate the market and make it more difficult for high-quality, traditionally published books to get noticed.
