Former Blizzard Boss Advocates for Developer Tipping System

Mike Ybarra, the former boss of Blizzard, has expressed his desire for a system that allows players to “tip” game developers. Ybarra shared his thoughts on Twitter, stating that there have been instances where he felt a game was worth more than the initial price he paid. He mentioned that he often wished he could give an additional $10 or $20 to the developers of games that left him in awe.

Ybarra acknowledged that his idea might not be popular, but he believes that some games are so special that they deserve more than their initial price. He cited games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Gears of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Elden Ring as examples of such games.

However, Ybarra’s suggestion has sparked a debate about the fairness of tipping in the gaming industry. Critics argue that it could lead to unequal distribution of tips and that it might be used to suppress wages. Despite the controversy, Ybarra stands by his idea, viewing it as a way to show appreciation for exceptional gaming experiences.
