Microsoft has started displaying full-screen Windows 11 upgrade advertisements on Windows 10 PCs. The ads, which began appearing after the recent Patch Tuesday updates were installed, are causing a major disruption in users’ workflow.
The full-screen prompt thanks the user for their loyalty using Windows 10 and warns that the end of life (EOL) date is approaching. It also advertises Windows 11, encouraging the user to learn more about how they can transition to a new Windows 11 PC. Notably, there’s no button to tell the prompt to never show again.
If you don’t update your Windows 10 PC even after October 14 next year, Microsoft will stop pushing fixes and security updates, making your system more vulnerable to various kinds of threats. You can opt for Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) to continue to get those updates without installing Windows 11, but you’ll have to pay to get an ESU license for Windows 10.
Microsoft is drawing a lot of flak not because of notifying users about the date, but because of how it’s displaying the ads.
