Nvidia, in collaboration with Georgia Tech, has announced the launch of the first AI supercomputer designed specifically for student use. This initiative, known as the AI Makerspace, aims to democratize access to computing resources typically reserved for large tech companies and researchers.
The AI Makerspace is a digital sandbox where students can understand and use AI in the classroom. It is powered by 20 Nvidia HGX H100 systems, which house 160 of Nvidia’s H100 GPUs. These GPUs are high in demand across the tech industry. For instance, it would take one of these 160 GPUs a single second to come up with a multiplication function that would take 50,000 students 22 years.
The supercomputer is designed to enhance students’ AI skills through hands-on experience. Initially, only undergraduate students at Georgia Tech will have access to the computing cluster as part of their coursework. However, by spring 2025, all undergraduate and graduate students at Georgia Tech will have access to the supercomputer.
Students will use the supercomputer for course projects related to various fields such as computer vision, large language models, robotics, supply chain management, chemical or biomedical engineering, and creativity and design pursuits related to generative AI. They can also use it for entrepreneurial ventures of their choice.
