Intel is reportedly investigating issues of instability in certain games with its 13th and 14th generation Core i9 CPUs. Over the past few months, gamers have reported problems while playing certain games, leading to a surge in customer returns of the Intel Core i9 CPUs for replacements.
The issue seems to predominantly affect games that use the Unreal Engine. Games like Tekken 8, Hogwarts Legacy, Remnant 2, Alan Wake 2, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part 1, and Outpost: Infinity Siege have been reported to experience crashes. In some cases, an error message stating “Out of video memory” appears, causing the game to shut down immediately. This is peculiar as the error is typically associated with GPU issues rather than CPU.
The leading theory suggests that the high clock speeds and voltages of the Core i9-13900K and 14900K CPUs could be the root cause of the instability. Some users have reported that underclocking the CPU slightly resolves the issue. However, this is not an ideal solution for those who have invested in a high-end CPU for optimal performance.
Intel is yet to release an official statement about the situation. The cause of the instability is still undetermined, but the company is actively looking into the problem.
