Elon Musk has made numerous predictions and promises throughout his career. While some of these have come to fruition, many have not. Here are some of the most notable instances where Musk’s predictions did not meet reality:
- Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): Musk predicted that AGI, the point when AI can apply reason and logic in the same way as humans, is just a year or two away. However, many experts disagree with this optimistic timeline. Gary Marcus, the CEO of Geometric Intelligence, even offered to bet Musk $1 million that AI won’t actually be “smarter” than humans by the end of 2025.
- Self-Driving Cars: Musk has been promising self-driving cars since 2014, stating that they would be available within months. However, as of now, Tesla cars are still not fully autonomous.
- Cybertruck Production: Musk announced the production of the Cybertruck in 2019, with an expected rollout in 2021. However, the vehicle is still not in production.
- Hyperloop: In 2017, Musk claimed to have received verbal government approval for the Boring Company to build an underground NY-Phil-Balt-DC Hyperloop. However, this project has not materialized.
- Twitter Acquisition: Musk signed a deal to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share partially because he wanted to “defeat the spam bots or die trying.” A few weeks later, he claimed that he couldn’t move forward with the deal unless Twitter proves that less than 5% of its users are bots.
These instances highlight the importance of taking Musk’s predictions with a grain of salt. While his vision and ambition have led to significant advancements in technology, not all of his predictions have come to pass.
