Apple is significantly expanding its operations in India, not only in terms of manufacturing but also in terms of employee welfare. The tech giant, along with its contract manufacturers and suppliers such as Foxconn, Tata, and Salcomp, is planning to build over 78,000 homes for its employees. This initiative is being partially funded by the Indian government.
India is becoming increasingly important to Apple’s global operations. The country now accounts for 14% of all iPhones produced, a figure that has doubled since the last fiscal year. This growth is part of Apple’s long-term strategy to reduce its over-reliance on China and diversify its manufacturing base.
The housing initiative is the largest of its kind in the private sector and is being carried out through a public-private partnership. The majority of the units, around 58,000, will be built in Tamil Nadu. The initiative aims to enhance efficiency and provide security, particularly for migrant women employees, many of whom currently live in rented accommodation.
This move follows Apple’s industrial housing model in China and Vietnam and is seen as a significant step towards improving worker welfare. It also aligns with Apple’s broader commitment to social responsibility, as demonstrated by its $1.5 billion investment to alleviate the housing crisis in California.
