Microsoft’s Confidence in ARM Windows Laptops Outperforming M3 MacBook Air

Microsoft is reportedly confident that its upcoming ARM-powered Windows laptops will outperform Apple’s M3-powered MacBook Air in both CPU performance and AI-accelerated tasks. These laptops will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors. Despite years of unfulfilled promises from Qualcomm, Microsoft believes that this year, Qualcomm will surpass Apple Silicon.

The new computers are set to be unveiled during an event on May 20. Microsoft plans to demonstrate how these processors will be faster than an M3 MacBook Air for CPU tasks, AI acceleration, and even app emulation. Microsoft claims that these new Windows AI PCs will have faster app-emulation than Rosetta 2, the application compatibility layer that Apple uses on its Apple Silicon Macs to translate apps compiled for 64-bit Intel processors to Apple’s own processors.

However, there are many questions to be answered. What compromises, if any, will Microsoft and Qualcomm have to make to achieve their goal of surpassing Apple Silicon? Will battery life and efficiency suffer? What about GPU performance? These are all critical areas to watch as Microsoft unveils its new ARM-powered Windows laptops.
