This claim was made in response to a report that xAI, another company led by Musk, was poaching Tesla’s engineers. Musk stated that Microsoft-backed OpenAI was actually trying to poach Ethan Knight, a machine learning scientist on Tesla’s Autopilot team. However, xAI managed to convince Knight to join its company, which is developing the Grok model.
Musk shared that OpenAI has been aggressively recruiting Tesla engineers and has been successful in a few cases. Despite this, Musk assured that Tesla’s AI and autonomy team still has more than 200 engineers. To stay competitive, Tesla is increasing its AI engineers’ compensation packages, but this will only occur if staff achieve various “progress milestones” while on its AI engineering team.
