Yahoo has announced the acquisition of Artifact, an AI-driven news app developed by Instagram’s co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The acquisition aims to bring Artifact’s AI features to Yahoo News, enhancing its content personalization capabilities.
Artifact, which was launched by Systrom and Krieger, focused on delivering the most relevant news stories to users through AI. Despite its innovative technology, Artifact struggled to scale and attract a large user base. Following its shutdown announcement, Yahoo approached Artifact for acquisition.
The acquisition will not include Artifact’s team. Instead, Systrom and Krieger will serve as “special advisors” for Yahoo. The remaining employees of Artifact have either found other jobs or plan to take a break.
The proprietary AI-powered personalization technology and other features of Artifact will be integrated across Yahoo, including the Yahoo News app, in the coming months.
